On July 23-25, 2021, Brian Sykes and I drove to Kansas City for a 3-day adventure. First stop was at Brian's friend Bill Scheerer to see his superb HO train layout. Bill is retired from CSX where he was chief signal officer and his layout is completely signaled.
Here is Bill with his dispatch board, customized for his layout. During operating sessions, the dispatcher will dispatch all train movements from this location.
Bill's layout was featured, and was the cover photo, of his B&O Monongah Division pike in Model Railroad Craftsman a couple of years ago. Here are a few pix of his layout.
Bill let me run two trains, a steam manifest and a diesel manifest on the entire loops. We could have stayed there much longer and run trains, but we had tickets to the Kansas City Royals-Detroit Tigers baseball game and it was time to head to Kauffman Stadium!
Even though I was an associate scout for the Kansas City Royals and have been to many major league stadiums around the country, I had never been to Kauffman Stadium, one of the most beautiful stadiums in major league baseball, and famous for his water fountains in centerfield. The Royals Hall of Fame is located in the stadium and free and full of great history. The temperature was 95 degrees but the locals didn't seem to mind--I guess that's a very normal temperature for KC in July. A fun time, and a Royals win!! Here's three pictures before sunset and three pix after sunset.
A great first day in Kansas City!!!!!!
